The Opinionation!

Ripper Street RIP?

Last night I had a tweet re-tweeted by a chap name of #JamieCrichton or @jamieinlondon.  The tweet concerned the BBC and it's treatment of Ripper Street.  Jamie Crichton is the author of said Ripper Street.

Two weeks ago The BBC announced that Victorian Crime Drama was to be cancelled.  It isn't necessarily the cancelation of Ripper Street I object to, but more the reason that they gave for the cancellation.  The BBC claim it's due to lack of ratings against ITV's I'm a Celebrity.

This claim just weeks after The BBC's new Director General Tony Hall stated that the BBC wasn't about ratings chasing.  The phrase quality not quantity springs to mind - the very tweet the Jamie Crichton shared with the 21,000 signatories of the online campaign to save Ripper street.

The BBC moved Ripper Street from a post Call the Midwife slot on a Sunday to Monday evenings.  a decision which put it directly against ant & Dec's jungle ratings magnet!  Some of us BBC remember 1989 when Doctor Who found itself being cancelled against coronation Street.

This isn't about ratings, it's about money.  The BBC lied and deliberately scheduled Ripper Street to smother it!  Top Geek love the BBC and whole heartedly support the license fee, but please - you are better than this.  You paste the slogan Quality Drama over your output - yet you decide to cancel it in favour of?......well, who knows.

The online uproar and media frenzy that the cancellation of Ripper Street has unleashed and the amazing tension building cliff hanger finale surely mean a re-think.  Re-schedule, re-structure (3x0 mins works for Sherlock) but cancelation?!!!

Top Geek hear that LoveFilm may be about to jump in and swipe Ripper Street from the Beeb, all I can say is same on you BBC, shame on you.  You're still my pal, but for now, hang your head.  I only hope you come to your senses.
